The Women Come to the TombWhen Shabbat was over, Miryam of Magdala, Miryam the mother of Ya`akov, and Shlomit bought spices in order to go and anoint Yeshua. Very early the next day, just after sunrise, they went to the tomb. They were asking each other, “Who will roll away the stone from the entrance to the tomb for us?” Then they looked up and saw that the stone, even though it was huge, had been rolled back already. (Matt 28:1; Mark 16:1-4; Luke 24:1-2; John 20:1)[1] His Resurrection AnnouncedOn entering the tomb, [they discovered that the body of the Lord Yeshua was gone! (Lk)] they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right; and they were dumbfounded. But [the angel (Mt)] said, “Don’t be so surprised! [I know you are (Mt)] looking for Yeshua from Natzeret, who was executed on the stake. He has risen [just as He said (Mt)], He's not here! Look at the place where they laid Him. But go and tell his talmidim, especially Kefa, that [He has been raised from the dead (Mt)] and He is going to the Galil ahead of you. You will see him there, just as he told you. [Now I have told you. Terror-stricken, they bowed down with their faces to the ground. The two men said to them, "“Why are you looking for the living among the dead? He is not here; he has been raised. Remember how he told you while he was still in the Galil, ‘The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men and be executed on a stake as a criminal, but on the third day be raised again’?” Then they remembered his words. Kefa and Yohanan View the TombThen Kefa and the other talmid [Yochanan] started for the tomb. They both ran, but the other talmid outran Kefa and reached the tomb first. Stooping down, he saw the linen burial-sheets lying there but did not go in. Then, following him, Shim`on Kefa arrived, entered the tomb and saw the burial-sheets lying there, also the cloth that had been around his head, lying not with the sheets but in a separate place and still folded up. Then the other talmid, who had arrived at the tomb first, also went in; he saw, and he trusted. (They had not yet come to understand that the Tanakh teaches that the Messiah has to rise from the dead.) So the talmidim returned home. (Luke 24:12; John 20:3-10) |

Miryam of Magdala Returns to the Tomb{When Yeshua rose early Sunday,[2] he appeared first to Miryam of Magdala, from whom he had expelled seven demons. (Mk)}[3] But Miryam stood outside crying. As she cried, she bent down, peered into the tomb, and saw two angels in white sitting where the body of Yeshua had been, one at the head and one at the feet. “Why are you crying?” they asked her. “They took my Lord,” she said to them, “and I don’t know where they have put him.” (John 20:11-13) Yeshua Appears to MiryamAs she said this, she turned around and saw Yeshua standing there, but she didn't know it was He. Yeshua said to her, “Lady, why are you crying? Whom are you looking for?” Thinking he was the gardener, she said to Him, “Sir, if you’re the one who carried Him away, just tell me where you put Him; and I’ll go and get Him myself.” Yeshua said to her, “Miryam!” Turning, she cried out to him in Hebrew, “Rabbani!” (that is, “Teacher!”) “"Stop holding onto me,” Yeshua said to her, “because I haven’t yet gone back to the Father. But go to my brothers, and tell them that I am going back to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.” (John 20:11-17) Yeshua Appears to the Other WomenSo they left the tomb quickly, frightened yet filled with joy; and they ran to give the news to his talmidim. The Chief Priests Cover UpAs they were going, some of the guards went into the city and reported to the head cohanim everything that had happened. Then they met with the elders; and after discussing the matter, they gave the soldiers a sizeable sum of money and said to them, “Tell people, ‘His talmidim came during the night and stole his body while we were sleeping.’ If the governor hears of it, we will put things right with him and keep you from getting in trouble.” The soldiers took the money and did as they were told, and this story has been spread about by Judeans till this very day. (Matt 28:11-15) The Women Report to the Nine Disciples[Miryam of Magdala went to the talmidim with the news that she had seen the Lord and that he had told her this. (Jn)] {And the other women,} returning from the tomb {with her}, told everything to the Eleven and to all the rest [who had been with him, as they were crying and mourning. (Mk)] The women who told the emissaries these things were Miryam of Magdala, Yochanah, Miryam the mother of Ya`akov, and the others in their circle. [But when they heard that he was alive and that she had seen him, they wouldn't believe it; (Mk)] in fact, they thought that what they said was utter nonsense! Yeshua Appears to Klofa and MiryamThat same day, two of them were going toward a village about seven miles from Yerushalayim called Amma'us, and they were talking with each other about all the things that had happened. As they talked and discussed, Yeshua himself [in another form (Mk)] came up and walked along with them, but something kept them from recognizing Him. He asked them, “What are you talking about with each other as you walk along?” They stopped short, their faces downcast; and one of them, named Cleopas, answered Him, “Are you the only person staying in Yerushalayim that doesn’t know the things that have been going on there the last few days?” “What things?" He asked them. They said to Him, “The things about Yeshua from Natzeret. He was a prophet and proved it by the things He did and said before God and all the people. Our head cohanim and our leaders handed Him over, so that He could be sentenced to death and executed on a stake as a criminal. And we had hoped that He would be the one to liberate Isra'el! Besides all that, today is the third day since these things happened; and this morning, some of the women astounded us. They were at the tomb early and couldn’t find His body, so they came back; but they also reported that they had seen a vision of angels who say He’s alive! Some of our friends went to the tomb and found it exactly as the women had said, but they didn’t see Him.” He said to them, “Foolish people! So unwilling to put your trust in everything the prophets spoke! Didn’t the Messiah have to die like this before entering his glory?” Then, starting with Moshe and all the prophets, He explained to them the things that can be found throughout the Tanakh concerning Himself. Shim`on saw him!” Then the two told what had happened on the road and how he had become known to them in the breaking of the matzah, [but they didn’t believe them either. Touch me and see — a ghost doesn't have flesh and bones, as you can see I do.” As he said this, He showed them his hands and feet. While they were still unable to believe it for joy and stood there dumbfounded, He said to them, “Have you something here to eat?” They gave Him a piece of broiled fish, which He took and ate in their presence. Yeshua said to them, “This is what I meant when I was still with you and told you that everything written about me in the Torah of Moshe, the Prophets, and the Psalms had to be fulfilled.” Then he opened their minds, so that they could understand the Tanakh. Don’t be lacking in trust, but have trust!” T'oma answered him, “My LORD [יְהוָה֒, YHWH] and my God [~yhla, Elohim]!” Yeshua said to him, “Have you trusted because you have seen me? Remember that in Hebrew timekeeping, the day ends and begins at sunset, not at midnight. [RETURN]
5. The Roman Church teaches that this passage gives priests the authority to forgive sins. Some other teachers claim this gives all clergy, or even all Christians, the authority to forgive sins. This saying of Yeshua must be understood in terms of first century Jewish jurisprudence.
In the Greek version of the Apostlic Scriptures (from which all English versions — except one or brand-new Messianic versions — have been translated, this phrase says, “If you forgive the sins of any, their sins are already having been forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are already having been retained.”
During the Second Temple Period in which Yeshua lived, the Torah contained the code of civil law and “sin” is defined as the viloation of Torah (see 1 John 3:4). The Sanhedrin was Israel’s Supreme Court, and the lower court of local Rabbis in each community was known as the Beit Din, or House of Judgement. It was the responsibility of these courts to determine the guilt or innocence of anyone charged with a violation of Torah (“sin”).
Yeshua knew that with His death and resurrection, the destruction of the Temple, the dispersion of Israel amaong the nations, and the end of the Sanhedrin were imminent. He therefore gave His Emissaries [Apostles] the judicial authority to replace the Sanhedrin as the ultimate authority in matter is “crimes against Torah.” They were being given the authority to determine a person’s guilt or innocence when charged with a “sin.” [“Everyone who keeps sinning is violating Torah - indeed, sin is violation of Torah.” (1John 3:4, CJB)] If the Emissaries determined that a person was innocent, it would be because their innocence was already having been determined (that is, they had already been forgiven) by Heaven; if the Emissaries determined that a person was guilty, it would be because their guilt was already having been determined (that is, they had already not been forgiven) by Heaven.
