The Acts of the Emissaries

5. Sha'ul’s Defense Before Agrippa (26:1-23)

1Agrippa said to Sha'ul, “You have permission to speak for yourself.”

Then Sha'ul stretched out his hand, and began his defense. 2“King Agrippa, I consider myself fortunate to able to make my defense before you today about everything that I am accused of by the Y'hudimJudeans, corrupt Jewish leaders, 3especially because you are expert in all the customs and contoversies among the Y’hudimJews. Therefore I beg you to listen patiently.

4“Indeed, all Y’hudim know my way of life from my youth, which was spent first in my own nation and later at Yerushalayim; 5if they were willing to testify, they have known that from the time I first arrived here [as a youth to study with Gamliel] I have lived a Pharisee, the strictest sect of our religion. 6Now I stand here being judged for the hope of the promise made by HaShem to our fathers, 7[the promise] our twelve tribes hope to attain as they earnestly serve HaShem night and day. It is because of this hope I am being accused by the Y'hudim, King Agrippa! 8Why would any of you consider it incredible that HaShem raises the dead?

9“I myself certainly thought that it was necessary to do many things against the name of this Yeshua of Nazareth. 10I actually did this in Yerushalayim. I locked up many of the t'zadikimrighteoous ones in prisons under the authority of the Cohenim GadolimLeading Priests (Sanhedrin). When they were put to death I cast my vote against them. 11In all the synagogues I often tried to make them blaspheme by torturing them. Filled with rage against them, I even persecuted them in foreign cities.

12“It was under these circumstances that I was traveling to DammesekDamascus with the authority and commission from the Cohenim Gadolim. 13It was noon, Your Majesty, and on my way I saw a light from heaven, brighter than the sun, shining all around me and those who traveled with me. 14When we had all fallen to the ground I heard a voice speaking to me in Hebrew, ‘Sha'ul, Sha'ul, why are you persecuting Me? It is hard for you to keep kicking against the goads.’

15“I said, ‘Who are you, Sir?’

“He said, ‘I am Yeshua, and you are persecuting Me! 16Get up, and stand on your feet! I have appeared to you for this purpose: to appoint you to serve and witness not just of the the things which you have seen, but also of the things which I will reveal to you; 17I will deliver you from the People[17] and from the Goyim to whom I’m sending you, 18to open their eyes, so they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to HaShem, so they may receive forgiveness of their sins and a place among those who are sanctified by trust in Me.’

19“So, King Agrippa, I didn’t dare disobey the vision from heaven! 20So I announced first in Dammesk, then in Yerushalayim and throughout the entire region of Y'hudah, including the Goyim, that they should turn from away sin and toward God, and then do mitzvotgood deeds consistent with their repentance. 21This is the reason the Y’hudim seized me in the Temple and tried to kill me. 22However, I have obtained HaShem’s help, and I stand here today testifying to both small and great, saying nothing but what the Prophets and Moshe said would happen, 23how the Messiah must suffer, and how, through the resurrection of the dead, He would be first to proclaim light both to our people and to the Goyim.”

6. Festus’ and Grippa’s Reaction (26:24-32)

24Just as reached this point in his defense, Festus shouted at the top of his voice, “Sha'ul, you’re crazy! Too much learning is driving you insane!”

25But Sha-ul said, “I’m not crazy, Your Excellency, but I am boldly declaring words of truth and reasonableness. 26The king, to whom I am also speaking freely, knows about all these things. I’m certain that none of these things have been hidden from him. None of this has been done in some back alley. 27King Agrippa, do you believe the prophets? I know that you do!”

28Agrippa said to Sha'ul, “With just this little persuasion are you trying to make me a Messianic?”

29Sha'ul answered, “I pray to HaShem that whether with little or with much persuasion, not just you, but also all who hear me today, might become just like me, except for these chains.”

30The king stood up with the governor and Bernice, and those who sat with them. 31After they had left, they said to each other, “This man has done nothing to deserve either death or prison.” 32Agrippa said to Festus, “If he hadn’t appealed to Caesar, he could have been released.”
