The Good News of the Kingdom according to
Yeshua, the Son of Man

~ 21 ~

5. The widow’s mite (vv 1-3) (Mk 12:41-44)

1Yeshua was watching the rich people putting their gifts into the Temple’s offering-boxes.[1] 2He saw a one poor widow who was putting in two lepta.[2] 3He said, I tell you the truth, this poor widow has put in more than all the others. 4For they all put in gifts for God out of their excess wealth; but out of her poverty she put in everything that she had to live on.

C. The Olivet Discourse (vv 5-38) (Mt 24:1-51; Mt 25:1-46; Mk 13:1-37)

1. The Temple to be destroyed (vv 5-6)

5As some people were talking about the Temple and how it was decorated with beautiful stonework and gifts that were dedicated to God, He said, 6As for these things which you’re looking at, the time will come when there will not be left a single stone standing on another; everything will be demolished.

2. The talmidimdisciples ask, “When … and what…?” (vv 7)

7They asked him, “Rabbi, when will these things happen? What will be the sign when these things are about to happen?”

3. Daniel’a 70th week and the aḥarit ha-yamimאחרית הימים, end of days (vv 8-11) (Dan 9:27; Mt 24:4-14; Mk 13:5-13)

8He said, Watch out that you don’t become deceived! Many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am He,’[8] and, ‘The time has come.’ Don’t follow them! 9When you hear of wars and rebellions,[9] don’t panic; these things must happen first, but the end won’t come right away.”

10Then he said to them, Nation will rise up against nation and kingdom against kingdom. 11There will be great earthquakes, famines, and plagues in various places. There will be terrifying events and great signs[11a] from Heaven.[11b]

4. Persecution before the 70th week (vv 12-19)

12But before all this, they will arrest you and persecute you, handing you over to synagogues[12a] and prisons; you will be brought before before kings and governors because of your relationship to Me.[12b] 13But it will turn into an opportunity for you to stand as a witness. 14So make up your mind to not plan beforehand how to offer your defense. 15I will give such eloquence and wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to resist or contradict. 16You will even be betrayed by parents, brothers, relatives, and friends. They will execute some of you. 17You will be hated by everyone because of Me. 18Yet not a hair of your head will be destroyed.[18]

19By your steadfast endurance you will win your [eternal] lives.

5. Destruction of Yerushalayim foretold (vv 20-24)

20But when you see YerushalayimJerusalem surrounded by armies, then realize that its desolation is imminent. 21Then those who are in Y'hudahJudea must flee to the mountains,  and those who are in the city must leave. Those who are in the country must not enter the city. 22For these are days of vengeance, so that everything which has been written may be fulfilled. 23Woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing infants in those days! For there will be great distress in the land, and wrath to this people. 24They will fall by the edge of the sword, and will be led captive into all the nations.[24a] YerushalayimJerusalem will be trampled down by the GoyimGentiles, non-Jews, until the times of the Goyim are fulfilled.[24b]

6. Return of the Son of Man (vv 25-28) (Mt 24:27-31; Mk 13:24-27)

25There will appear signs in the sun, moon, and stars; and on the earth there will be anguish among nations bewildered by the roaring sea and the waves;[25] 26men fainting for fear at their expectation of the things which are coming on the world:[26] for the celestial powers will be shaken. 27Then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. 28But when these things begin to happen, stand up straight and hold your heads high, because your redemption is near.

7. Parable of the Fig Tree (vv 29-33)

29He told them a parable. See the fig tree, and all the trees. 30As soon as they start budding, you see it and know for yourselves that summer is near. 31In the same way, when you see these things happening, know that the Kingdom of God is near. 32Most certainly I tell you, this people[32] will not pass away until everything has happened. 33Heaven and earth will come to an end, but My words will never come to an end.

8. Watchfulness urged (vv 34-38) (Mt 24:36-51; Mk 13:32-37)

34So be careful that your minds don’t become dulled by carousing, drunkenness, and the worries of this life, so that day won’t suddenly overtake you like a trap. 35For it will come to everyone who lives on the earth. 36Stay always on the alert, praying that you may have the strength to escape all these things that are about to happen, and to stand before the Son of Man.

37Every day Yeshua was teaching in the Temple, but every evening He would go out and spend the night on the mountain that is called Olivet. 38All the people would get up early early in the morning to come to Him in the Temple and listen to Him teach.

Chapter 22

 1. The offering-boxes in the Temple had a metallic trumpet-shaped receptacle on the top. The hypocrites that Yeshua criticized would make a great show of tossing their coins into these receptacles in such a way they would make a lot of noise so everyone could hear how many coins were being deposited. [RETURN]

 2. Two lepta was about 1% of a day’s wages for an agricultural laborer. [RETURN]

 8. Greek: ego eimi, ego eimi, or I AM, the covenant name by which HaShem revealed Himself to Moshe. (Exodus 3:14) Referring to false prophets and other charlatans claiming to be the Messiah. Since the word “Messiah” means “anointed,” this might also refer to anyone who claims any sort of “special anointing.” [RETURN]

 9. Rebellions: Greek akatastasia, akatastasia; instability, a state of disorder, disturbance, confusion. Have you been watching the news lately? [RETURN]

11a. Signs: Greek semeion, semeion, a sign, mark, token; that by which a person or a thing is distinguished from others and is known; a sign, prodigy, portent, i.e. an unusual occurrence, transcending the common course of nature. [RETURN]

11b. This does not necessarily mean either astronomical events or events in our atmosphere. Remember that the word “Heaven” is often used as a circumlocution for “God.” So this could mean any sign from God. [RETURN]

12a. At the time Yeshua spoke these words, the Synagogue’s Beit Din (House of Judgment) was the equivalent of America’s Municipal Court. [RETURN]

12b. As I write these notes (July 2020), Believers in Messiah are being severely persecuted all over the world, in about every country except in America (so far!). But we have a general election coming up in just over three months, and one of the political parties is already doing everything possible to erase the Name of God from our nation, using the COVID-19 crisis as an excuse to close down houses of worship, and making thoughts and speech with which they disagree into criminal offenses. If they win this election, we may be seeing severe persecution in America very soon. [RETURN]

18. He just finished saying that many would be severely persecuted and that some would be executed. Therefore, “not a hair of your head will be destroyed” has to mean that nothing will happen that will affect your eternal destiny in any way. [RETURN]

24a. All of these things were fulfilled in 70 CE with the destruction of Jerusalem and the dispersion of the Hebrew nation into hte Diaspora. However, it will probably see at least a partial fulfillment again in the days immediately preceding Yeshua’s return. [RETURN]

24b. On June 7, 1967, the Israeli Defense Forces liberated Jerusalem’s Old City and the Western Wall from Muslim, hands and shortly afterwards the city of Jerusalem was reunited. For the first time since 70 CE, Jerusalem was firmly in the hands of the Hebrew people. Was that the day that marked the end of the “time of the Goyim”? Only history will tell for sure. [RETURN]

25. Can this be referring to the concern that some people have that the polar ice caps will melt and the oceans will inundate costal cities? I'm not actually saying that Yeshua predicted our current events. However, we should be aware of what is going on in the world around us, and be ever vigilant for signs of His return. What we are seeing now may be quite similar to what we will see just before He comes back. [RETURN]

26. As I write this, entire nations are closed down and people are cowering in their homes and wearing facemasks outside in terror over an unseen virus. Was Yeshua referring to this? Probably not, but this should serve as an example of the kind of fear he was speaking of. Don't be foolish and say, “It can’t happen here.” [RETURN]

32. People: Greek genea, genea, people of the same stock, a family. Most English translations render this word as “generation,” causing Bible teachers since the first century to teach that “ours is the terminal generation, Yeshua must certainly return in our lifetime.” For 2,000 years they have been wrong. I am convinced, in view of the nearness of the destruction of Jerusalem, the elimination of the nation of Israel, and the dispersion of the Jewish people out into the Gentile nations, that He meant to assure His listeners that the Jewish people would still be here as a recognizable people-group when He returns for them. [RETURN]
