Rishon [1st]:  29 10You stand this day all of you before ADONAI your God; your heads, your tribes, your elders, and your officers, even all the men of Yisra'el, 11your little ones, your wives, and your foreigner who is in the midst of your camps, from the one who cuts your wood to the one who draws your water; 12that you may enter into the covenant of ADONAI your God, and into his oath, which ADONAI your God makes with you this day;


Sheni [2nd]: 13that He may establish you this day to Himself for a people, and that He may be to you a God, as He spoke to you, and as He swore to your fathers, to Avraham, to Yitzchak, and to Ya`akov.

14Neither with you only do I make this covenant and this oath, 15 but with him who stands here with us this day before ADONAI our God, and also with him who is not here with us this day.


Shlishi [3rd]:  16(for you know how we lived in the land of Egypt, and how we came through the midst of the nations through which you passed; 17and you have seen their abominations, and their idols, wood and stone, silver and gold, which were among them); 18lest there should be among you man, or woman, or family, or tribe, whose heart turns away this day from ADONAI our God, to go to serve the gods of those nations; lest there should be among you a root that bears gall and wormwood; 19and it happen, when he hears the words of this curse, that he bless himself in his heart, saying, I shall have shalom, though I walk in the stubbornness of my heart, to destroy the moist with the dry. 20ADONAI will not pardon him, but then the anger of ADONAI and His jealousy will smoke against that man, and all the curse that is written in this book shall lie on him, and ADONAI will blot out his name from under the sky. 21ADONAI will set him apart to evil out of all the tribes of Yisra'el, according to all the curses of the covenant that is written in this book of the law.

22The generation to come, your children who shall rise up after you, and the foreigner who shall come from a far land, shall say, when they see the plagues of that land, and the sicknesses with which ADONAI has made it sick; 23and that the whole land of it is sulfur, and salt, and a burning, that it is not sown, nor bears, nor any grass grows therein, like the overthrow of Sedom and `Amorah, Admah, and Tzevoyim, which ADONAI overthrew in His anger, and in His wrath: 24even all the nations shall say, Why has ADONAI done thus to this land? what means the heat of this great anger? 25Then men shall say, Because they forsook the covenant of ADONAI, the God of their fathers, which He made with them when He brought them forth out of the land of Egypt, 26 and went and served other gods, and worshiped them, gods that they didn't know, and that He had not given to them: 27therefore the anger of ADONAI was kindled against this land, to bring on it all the curse that is written in this book; 28and ADONAI rooted them out of their land in anger, and in wrath, and in great indignation, and cast them into another land, as at this day.

29The secret things belong to ADONAI our God; but the things that are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this Torah.


R'vi'i [4th]:  30 1It shall happen, when all these things are come on you, the blessing and the curse, which I have set before you, and you shall call them to mind among all the nations, where ADONAI your God has driven you, 2and shall return to ADONAI your God, and shall obey His voice according to all that I command you this day, you and your children, with all your heart, and with all your soul; 3that then ADONAI your God will turn your captivity, and have compassion on you, and will return and gather you from all the peoples, where ADONAI your God has scattered you. 4If any of your outcasts are in the uttermost parts of the heavens, from there will ADONAI your God gather you, and from there will he bring you back: 5and ADONAI your God will bring you into the land which your fathers possessed, and you shall possess it; and He will do you good, and multiply you above your fathers. 6ADONAI your God will circumcise your heart, and the heart of your seed, to love ADONAI your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, that you may live.


Chamishi [5th]:  7ADONAI your God will put all these curses on your enemies, and on those who hate you, who persecuted you. 8You shall return and obey the voice of ADONAI, and do all his mitzvot which I command you this day. 9ADONAI your God will make you plenteous in all the work of your hand, in the fruit of your body, and in the fruit of your cattle, and in the fruit of your ground, for good: for ADONAI will again rejoice over you for good, as He rejoiced over your fathers.

10If you shall obey the voice of ADONAI your God, to keep His mitzvot and His statutes which are written in this book of the Torah; if you turn to ADONAI your God with all your heart, and with all your soul.


Shishi [6th]:  11For this mitzvah which I command you this day, it is not too hard for you, neither is it far off. 12It is not in heaven, that you should say, Who shall go up for us to heaven, and bring it to us, and make us to hear it, that we may do it? 13Neither is it beyond the sea, that you should say, Who shall go over the sea for us, and bring it to us, and make us to hear it, that we may do it? 14But the word is very near to you, in your mouth, and in your heart, that you may do it.


Shvi'i [7th]:   15Behold, I have set before you this day life and good, and death and evil; 16in that I command you this day to love ADONAI your God, to walk in His ways, and to keep His mitzvot and His statutes and His ordinances, that you may live and multiply, and that ADONAI your God may bless you in the land where you go in to possess it. 17But if your heart turn away, and you will not hear, but shall be drawn away, and worship other gods, and serve them;


Maftir [Concluding]: 18I denounce to you this day, that you shall surely perish; you shall not prolong your days in the land, where you pass over the Yarden to go in to possess it.

19I call heaven and earth to witness against you this day, that I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse: therefore choose life, that you may live, you and your seed; 20to love ADONAI your God, to obey His voice, and to cleave to Him; for He is your life, and the length of your days; that you may dwell in the land which ADONAI swore to your fathers, to Avraham, to Yitzchak, and to Ya`akov, to give them.

The Blessing After Torah

Yesha‘yahu 61:10-63:9

61 10I will greatly rejoice in ADONAI, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for He has clothed me with the garments of salvation, He has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with a garland, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. 11For as the eretz brings forth its bud, and as the garden causes the things that are sown in it to spring forth; so ADONAI Eloheinu will cause righteousness and praise to spring forth before all the goyim.

62 1For Tziyon's sake will I not hold my shalom, and for Yerushalayim's sake I will not rest, until her righteousness go forth as brightness, and her yeshu`ah as a lamp that burns. 2The nations shall see your righteousness, and all kings your glory, and you shall be called by a new name, which the mouth of ADONAI shall name. 3You shall also be a crown of beauty in the hand of ADONAI, and a royal diadem in the hand of your God. 4You shall no more be termed Forsaken; neither shall your land any more be termed Desolate: but you shall be called Heftzi-Bah, and your land Beulah; for ADONAI delights in you, and your land shall be married. 5For as a young man marries a virgin, so shall your sons marry you; and as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride, so shall your God rejoice over you.

6I have set watchmen on your walls, Yerushalayim; they shall never hold their shalom day nor night: you who call on ADONAI, take no rest, 7and give Him no rest, until He establishes, and until He makes Yerushalayim a praise in the eretz.

8ADONAI has sworn by His right hand, and by the arm of His strength, “Surely I will no more give your grain to be food for your enemies; and foreigners shall not drink your new wine, for which you have labored: 9but those who have garnered it shall eat it, and praise ADONAI; and those who have gathered it shall drink it in the courts of my sanctuary.”

10Go through, go through the gates; prepare you the way of the people; cast up, cast up the highway; gather out the stones; lift up an ensign for the peoples. 11Behold, ADONAI has proclaimed to the end of the eretz, “Say you to the daughter of Tziyon, ‘Behold, your yeshu`ah comes; behold, His reward is with Him, and His recompense before him. 12They shall call them “The holy people, The redeemed of ADONAI:” and you shall be called “Sought out, A city not forsaken.” ’ ”

God’s Day of Vengeance and Redemption

63 1Who is this coming from Edom, from Bozrah, with His garments stained crimson? Who is this, robed in splendor, striding forward in the greatness of His strength?

“It is I, speaking in righteousness, mighty to save.”

2Why are your garments red, like those of one treading the winepress?

3I have trodden the winepress alone; from the goyim no one was with Me.[1] I trampled them in my anger and trod them down in my wrath; their blood spattered my garments, and I stained all my clothing. 4For the day of vengeance was in My heart, and the year of My redemption has come. 5I looked, but there was no one to help, I was appalled that no one gave support; so My own arm worked salvation for Me, and My own wrath sustained me. 6I trampled the goyim in My anger; in My wrath I made them drunk and poured their blood on the ground.”

Praise and Prayer

7I will tell of the kindnesses of ADONAI, the deeds for which He is to be praised, according to all ADONAI has done for us — yes, the many good things He has done for the house of Israel, according to His compassion and many kindnesses. 8He said, “Surely they are My people, sons who will not be false to Me"; and so He became their Savior. 9In all their distress He too was distressed, and the angel of His presence saved them. In His love and mercy He redeemed them; He lifted them up and carried them all the days of old.

Luke 24:1-12

30What shall we say then? That the Goyim, who didn't follow after righteousness, attained to righteousness, even the righteousness which is of faith; 31but Yisra'el, following after a law of righteousness, didn't arrive at the law of righteousness. 32Why? Because they didn't seek it by faith, but as it were by works of the law.[2] They stumbled over the stumbling stone; 33even as it is written, "Behold, I lay in Tziyon a stumbling stone and a rock of offense; And no one who believes in him will be put to shame."

14Follow after shalom with all men, and the sanctification without which no man will see the Lord, 15looking carefully lest there be any man who falls short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby the many be defiled;

Acts 19-20

19 1It happened that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Sha'ul, having passed through the upper country, came to Ephesus, and found certain disciples. 2He said to them, “Did you receive Ruach HaKodesh when you believed?”

They said to him, “No, we haven’t even heard that there is a Ruach HaKodesh.”

3He said, “Into what then were you immersed?”

They said, “Into Yochanan’s immersion.”

4Sha'ul said, “Yochanan indeed immersed with the immersion of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe in the one who would come after him, that is, in Yeshua.”

5When they heard this, they were immersed in the name of the Lord Yeshua. 6When Sha'ul had laid his hands on them, Ruach HaKodesh came on them, and they spoke with other languages and prophesied. 7They were about twelve men in all. 8He entered into the synagogue, and spoke boldly for a period of three months, reasoning and persuading about the things concerning the Kingdom of God.

9But when some were hardened and disobedient, speaking evil of the Way before the multitude, he departed from them, and separated the disciples, reasoning daily in the school of Tyrannus. 10This continued for two years, so that all those who lived in Asia heard the word of the Lord Yeshua, both Y’hudim and Greeks.

11God worked special miracles by the hands of Sha'ul, 12so that even handkerchiefs or aprons were carried away from his body to the sick, and the evil spirits went out. 13But some of the itinerant Y’hudim, exorcists, took on themselves to invoke over those who had the evil spirits the name of the Lord Yeshua, saying, “We adjure you by Yeshua whom Sha'ul preaches.” 14There were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, who did this.

15The evil spirit answered, “Yeshua I know, and Sha'ul I know, but who are you?” 16The man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and overpowered them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded. 17This became known to all, both Y’hudim and Greeks, who lived at Ephesus. Fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Yeshua was magnified. 18Many also of those who had believed came, confessing, and declaring their deeds. 19Many of those who practiced magical arts brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all. They counted the price of them, and found it to be fifty thousand pieces of silver. 20So the word of the Lord was growing and becoming mighty.

21Now after these things had ended, Sha'ul determined in the spirit, when he had passed through Macedonia and Achaia, to go to Yerushalayim, saying, “After I have been there, I must also see Rome.”

22Having sent into Macedonia two of those who served him, Timothy and Erastus, he himself stayed in Asia for a while. 23About that time there arose no small stir concerning the Way. 24For a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith, who made silver shrines of Artemis, brought no little business to the craftsmen, 25whom he gathered together, with the workmen of like occupation, and said, “Sirs, you know that by this business we have our wealth. 26You see and hear, that not at Ephesus alone, but almost throughout all Asia, this Sha'ul has persuaded and turned away many people, saying that they are no gods, that are made with hands. 27Not only is there danger that this our trade come into disrepute, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis will be counted as nothing, and her majesty destroyed, whom all Asia and the world worships.”

28When they heard this they were filled with anger, and cried out, saying, “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!” 29The whole city was filled with confusion, and they rushed with one accord into the theater, having seized Gaius and Aristarchus, men of Macedonia, Sha'ul’s companions in travel. 30When Sha'ul wanted to enter in to the people, the disciples didn’t allow him. 31Certain also of the Asiarchs, being his friends, sent to him and begged him not to venture into the theater. 32Some therefore cried one thing, and some another, for the assembly was in confusion. Most of them didn’t know why they had come together. 33They brought Alexander out of the multitude, the Y’hudim putting him forward. Alexander beckoned with his hand, and would have made a defense to the people. 34But when they perceived that he was a Jew, all with one voice for a time of about two hours cried out, “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”

35When the town clerk had quieted the multitude, he said, “You men of Ephesus, what man is there who doesn’t know that the city of the Ephesians is temple keeper of the great goddess Artemis, and of the image which fell down from Zeus? 36Seeing then that these things can’t be denied, you ought to be quiet, and to do nothing rash. 37For you have brought these men here, who are neither robbers of temples nor blasphemers of your goddess. 38If therefore Demetrius and the craftsmen who are with him have a matter against anyone, the courts are open, and there are proconsuls. Let them press charges against one another. 39But if you seek anything about other matters, it will be settled in the regular assembly. 40For indeed we are in danger of being accused concerning this day’s riot, there being no cause. Concerning it, we wouldn’t be able to give an account of this commotion.” 41When he had thus spoken, he dismissed the assembly.

20 1After the uproar had ceased, Sha'ul sent for the disciples, took leave of them, and departed to go into Macedonia. 2When he had gone through those parts, and had encouraged them with many words, he came into Greece. 3When he had spent three months there, and a plot was made against him by Y’hudim as he was about to set sail for Syria, he determined to return through Macedonia. 4These accompanied him as far as Asia: Sopater of Beroea; Aristarchus and Secundus of the Thessalonians; Gaius of Derbe; Timothy; and Tychicus and Trophimus of Asia. 5But these had gone ahead, and were waiting for us at Troas. 6We sailed away from Philippi after the days of Unleavened Bread, and came to them at Troas in five days, where we stayed seven days.

7On the first day of the week, when the disciples were gathered together to break bread, Sha'ul talked with them, intending to depart on the next day, and continued his speech until midnight. 8There were many lights in the upper chamber where we[3] were gathered together. 9A certain young man named Eutychus sat in the window, weighed down with deep sleep. As Sha'ul spoke still longer, being weighed down by his sleep, he fell down from the third story, and was taken up dead. 10Sha'ul went down, and fell upon him, and embracing him said, “Don’t be troubled, for his life is in him.”

11When he had gone up, and had broken bread, and eaten, and had talked with them a long while, even until break of day, he departed. 12They brought the boy in alive, and were greatly comforted.

13But we who went ahead to the ship set sail for Assos, intending to take Sha'ul aboard there, for he had so arranged, intending himself to go by land. 14When he met us at Assos, we took him aboard, and came to Mitylene. 15Sailing from there, we came the following day opposite Chios. The next day we touched at SAmotz and stayed at Trogyllium, and the day after we came to Miletus. 16For Sha'ul had determined to sail past Ephesus, that he might not have to spend time in Asia; for he was hastening, if it were possible for him, to be in Yerushalayim on the day of Shavu`ot.

17From Miletus he sent to Ephesus, and called to himself the elders of the assembly. 18When they had come to him, he said to them, “You yourselves know, from the first day that I set foot in Asia, how I was with you all the time, 19serving the Lord with all humility, with many tears, and with trials which happened to me by the plots of the Y’hudim; 20how I didn’t shrink from declaring to you anything that was profitable, teaching you publicly and from house to house, 21testifying both to Y’hudim and to Greeks repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Yeshua.* 22Now, behold, I go bound by the Spirit to Yerushalayim, not knowing what will happen to me there; 23except that Ruach HaKodesh testifies in every city, saying that bonds and afflictions wait for me. 24But these things don’t count; nor do I hold my life dear to myself, so that I may finish my race with joy, and the ministry which I received from the Lord Yeshua, to fully testify to the Good News of the grace of God.

25“Now, behold, I know that you all, among whom I went about proclaiming the Kingdom of God, will see my face no more. 26Therefore I testify to you this day that I am clean from the blood of all men, 27for I didn’t shrink from declaring to you the whole counsel of God. 28Take heed, therefore, to yourselves, and to all the flock, in which Ruach HaKodesh has made you overseers, to shepherd the assembly of the Lord and God which he purchased with his own blood. 29For I know that after my departure, vicious wolves will enter in among you, not sparing the flock. 30Men will arise from among your own selves, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after them. 31Therefore watch, remembering that for a period of three years I didn’t cease to admonish everyone night and day with tears. 32Now, brothers, I entrust you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build up, and to give you the inheritance among all those who are sanctified. 33I coveted no one’s silver, or gold, or clothing. 34You yourselves know that these hands served my necessities, and those who were with me. 35In all things I gave you an example, that so laboring you ought to help the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Yeshua, that he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’

36When he had spoken these things, he knelt down and prayed with them all. 37They all wept a lot, and fell on Sha'ul’s neck and kissed him, 38sorrowing most of all because of the word which he had spoken, that they should see his face no more. And they accompanied him to the ship.

The Blessing of the Messiah

Ba-rookh ah-tah Adonai Eh-lo-hay-noo,
meh-lekh hah-oh-lahm,
ah-sher keed-sha-noo beed-va-reh-khah
v'na-tahn la-noo et Yeshuah M'shee-khay-noo,
v'tzee-va-noo l'he-oat oar lah-oh-lahm.

Blessed are You, O Lord our God,
King of the Universe,
Who has sanctified us in Your Word,
and given us Yeshua, our Messiah,
and commanded us to be a light to the world.




  1. This may well be is a prophecy of the time in our very near future, when Yeshua comes to redeem Israel and usher in the Kingdom; when Israel is totally surrounded and under siege by the Islamic nations bent on her total destruction, and none of the Gentile nations will lift a finger to help her. He says that “from the Goyim (Gentiles or Gentile nations) no one was with Me? Beware, America and Europe! Then He says, ”I trampled the goyim in My anger!” [RETURN]

  2. Be very careful in your interpretation here. Those in the Church usually use this as a “proof text” to show that Torah is obsolete and therefore has been abolished because it is of no value. What Dr. Luke actually says is that their faith was misplaced. Instead of placing their faith in the mercy of HaShem, they tried to earn their salvation through their own effort. What God requires of us is that we place our trust absolutely in His mercy, but also that we live lives of righteousness in obedience to His Torah. [RETURN]

  3. This is the first time that Dr. Luke refers to himself as being among the Emissaries, so apparently it is here that he joins Rav Sha'ul.  [RETURN]
