ecclesia ekklesia [Greek equivalent of Hebrew
miqra]
a gathering of citizens called out from their homes into some public place, an assembly;
used in the LXX to refer to a “holy convocation of Israel”
- an assembly of the people convened at the public place of the council for the purpose of deliberating
- the assembly of the Israelites
- any gathering or throng of men assembled by chance, tumultuously
Incorrectly translated in English Bibles as “church.”
See Where Did the Word “Church” Come From for a lengthy discussion
echad אֶחָד (’e·ḥāḏ)
“one”; denotes a “compound unity” that is found, for example, in
one bunch of grapes, or one congregation of numerous individuals;
the defining attribute of God as a “compound unity”:
“Sh'ma, Yisra'el! ADONAI Eloheinu, ADONAI
echad [Hear, Isra'el! ADONAI
our God, ADONAI is one]” (Deut. 6:4); contrast
yachid,
the oneness of singularity
“Note that the rabbinic teaching declares that echad represents the fusion of diverse elements into a harmonious whole. The oneness of
echad is not undermined by plurality; indeed, it employs plurality as the ingredients of unity. Thus, even within the most orthodox Jewish teachings the word
echad carries the idea of plurality in unity. I personally feel that by this orthodox Jewish definition of
echad, we are not contradicting Scripture with the teachings of a Trinity as understood in our classical orthodox theology. If Deuteronomy were to destroy the doctrine of the Trinity it would have had to use the word
yachid not
echad.” (Chaim BenTorah,
