A woman of Jericho who aided the spies
to escape; saved from the destruction of Jericho; married Salmon, an
ancestor of King David and of the Messiah; commended for her faith
in the book of James. She is often referred to as a “harlot,” but
the word
'ishshah used to describe her in the book of Joshua is used
a total of 674 time in the Hebrew Bible. Of all those times, the New
American Standard translates it “harlot” or “adultress” only twice
each. The most common translations are wife or wives (374 times),
and
woman or women (307 times). It is the same
word used to describe Eve and Sarah (and most other wives in the
Bible), and nobody refers to them as harlots. I think Rahab has been
given a bum rap!
